Conservation

Micheal O'day SCI-Alamo has given two San Antonio students the opportunity to go to our SCI Apprentice camp. The two campers that have been awarded are Devin Durham and Robert Adcock. At the camp they will be taught about conservation, ethics, animal identification and care, proper handling of firearms, and many other things. These two students have had the opportunity to be in the outdoors, but have never been given the privilege to go to a hunting camp. Fortunately, at Indian head Ranch these campers will be given this opportunity. Indian head Ranch has been conducting these summer camps for the past 5 years and it is regarded as one of the premier outdoor camps. These two campers are going to have a blast due to the support of our club members. If you would like to see more information about the camps you can go to: indianheadcamps.com. Thanks to our members and thanks to our two lucky campers.

Devin Durham

My name is Devin Durham; I am 13 years old and attend Heritage Middle School in San Antonio Texas. There are quite a few reasons why I want to go to this camp. All of them are things that I would like to learn how to do and hopefully by the end of camp excel at. Archery and shooting a gun are two of them another is to shoot an animal and harvest it. I enjoy being outdoors and I love learning about nature.

I would really like the opportunity to get better at shooting a bow & arrow. I first learned how to use a bow and arrow in cub-scouts. I used to be pretty good at it, but it has been awhile and I'm probably not very good any more.

Another thing that I was ok at was shooting a gun. It has been awhile for that also. Something I've wanted to do for a really long time is to shoot my first animal. See, I'm 13 and it's a little embarrassing, that I have never had a chance to experience this. My dad lives pretty far away and he is really busy with work so he doesn't get much time to show me this stuff.

I would also like to know more about how hunting and fishing play a role in the conservation of the animals and their habitats. I love being outside. Some of my favorite things to do are camping, swimming, hiking and fishing.

This camp will give me the opportunity to learn experience and accomplish things that I would otherwise miss out on. I am looking forward to archery, shooting and handling a gun, hiking, fishing, and swimming. I am also looking forward to learning about nature and conservation. But mostly I am looking forward to learning and experiencing new things. I can't wait for camp to start.

Thank you,
Devin Durham

Robert Adcock

Hi my name is Robert Adcock, I'm 15 years old and I live in San antonio, TX. I LOVE TO HUNT AND FISH. I would enjoy the camp because it would give me something new to experience from and to be able to interact with other kids my age, older, or younger. I would also benefit from the camp by learning more about the outdoors and learn about how animals deal with changes in their habitat. I would also be able to experience how animals interact with each other. I would also enjoy it because it gives me something else to hun for instead of rabbits and doves.

I love to hunt and grew up around hunting but I could hardly hunt for deer because of my school and helping my grandparents on our farm. I went and took a my hunters course so I was able to hunt with out an adult sitting next to me and only been able to harvest a good mature 8-point buck last year.

I've always wanted to go to a camp to see how it would be their and to try something new out instead of staying home watching hunting shows wishing I was ou their doing that instead of sitting on the couch. It would really be a good experience for me and I am interest in different types of deer and how the deer lufecycle works and how long a deer lives. I would also love to see how a guide service works and what they do because I would like to be a guide when I get older.

I'm Robert Adcock and I was a recipient of SCI-Alamo chapters youth scholarship for summer camp at the Indianhead Ranch. I just wanted to say thanks for picking me. I truly appreciated it, and was able to learn a lot from the camp. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to experience something new. I learned how to track a downed animal in the field. I also learned to use a GPS unit so I can find my way back to camp or wherever I am trying to go to. I learned about different plant life and which wild plants you can use to heal a cut or wound. Again, thank you SCI for the opportunity and I look forward to the future outdoors.

Sincerely,
Robert Adcock
