Lecture Title: "Hearing Loss with Shooting Activities"
Dr. Wes Krueger has enjoyed hunting all over the world. His particular passion in the past was sheep hunting. He completed his Grand Slam for wild sheep in 1992 and his Super Slam in 1998. He has taken 23 wild sheep and has also done a great deal of shooting with other activities.
As a Neurotologist (a specialty dealing with hearing), he has extensive knowledge about hearing and how shooting activities affect the ear. As you participate in shooting sports, you will encounter many different shooting situations. The goal of this lecture is to provide you information which can enhance your safety and awareness in your shooting environment, while preserving your hearing, and therefore retain your ability to communicate and hear those things which are most valuable to you.
This lecture will specifically review the basics of hearing, the immediate and long-term affects which shooting can have on your hearing, and how to protect your hearing to the fullest extent possible. You will learn how to choose the correct hearing protection for different shooting environments. The different types of hearing protection will be discussed as well as the pros and cons of each with regard to the effectiveness of the products, and which types of hearing protection are right for the different shooting scenarios. You will be shown types of hearing protection that also increase your ability to hear environmental sounds, keeping you safer when hunting in dangerous environments, yet still protect you from impact noise at the same time. This lecture will also address the importance of general ear health, including hearing evaluations, physician's examinations, and cerumen management.
